Call for volunteers: ArcticNet Student Day 2015 Organizing Committee

Dear APECS Canada members,

This is a call for volunteers to be part of the ArcticNet Student Day 2015 Organizing Committee. The next ArcticNet meeting will be held in Vancouver this December. From my involvement last year, I found volunteering a very enjoyable experience and helped me to make a lot of new connections in the polar research community.

Roles on the organizing committee include, but are not limited to:

- workshop development
- plenary talk development
- elevator pitches organization
- social events planning
- event set-up
- social media support and photography

Some roles will require more of a time commitment than others and I will try my best to find a good fit for you if you are part of the team. You will never have to work on any responsibilities by yourself as we will break off into smaller groups to accomplish different tasks.

We are planning to have our first meeting next week via GoTo Meeting. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested in helping out and I will send you a link to the meeting Doodle poll along with additional information. The poll closes on Sunday at noon. We are depending on our community of early career researchers to make this student-led initiative a success once again!

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

Sincerely,

Dan Lamhonwah

Subject: 2 PhD positions to assess climate change impacts on biodiversity and C dynamics in Norwegian mountains!
To: ITEX-LIST@lists.ubc.ca

Dear Colleagues,

We're starting up a new project investigating biodiversity and carbon storage of alpine ecosystems under climate change (http://www.uib.no/en/rg/EECRG/85396/funcab). The project focuses on the roles of, and interactions between, different functional groups of plants and microbes in controlling the biodiversity and carbon storage of these systems under climate change. Removal experiments (graminoids, forbs, bryophytes), plant and microbial biodiversity assessments, and C flux and stock measurements will make up the core field and lab components  of the project. The project will make use of the 'climate grid' of experimental sites set up by the SeedClim project (http://www.uib.no/en/rg/EECRG/55395/seedclim) along temperature and precipitation gradients in western Norway.

So lots of exciting field work carried out in the beautiful fjord landscapes of western Norway.

And for all this, we need PhD students!

We are now advertising *two PhD positions*, open now, deadline the 9th and 2nd of March, respectively, to work on

Biodiversity:

C dynamics:

Please help me spread the word!

Best,

Vigdis

science fair judging

Hello APECS Canada!

The Québec science fair finals are coming up quickly and judges are needed. I believe that more people in APECS might want to do that.

Let's give back to society and make children become scientists!

Here's for example the one in Québec City.

CPC helping APECS members attend the ArcticAge Conference in Ottawa

Hi Everyone,

In March the ArcticAge Conference will be taking place in Ottawa (http://cityage.org/arctic/). The meeting has lined up a cross-section of speakers involved in the Arctic to discuss future directions in the north.

From the conference website:
The future of the Arctic is one of the most important international debates of the 21st Century. Government, businesses and people are asking questions that will have consequences for the North and the rest of the planet for generations to come.

That's why on March 17, CityAge Media will organize the inaugural ArcticAge: Our Northern Future. This special event will gather leaders in business and government with indigenous and northern leaders to address new models of private and public investment in the Arctic.

The Canadian Polar Commission is one of the presenting bodies, and has offered to support the attendance of 5 APECS members at the meeting through covering their registration fees. There is no travel money associated with this so we are looking for Ottawa area participants.

As part of your participation at the meeting we are then asking APECS members that attend this one day event to help communicate the meeting to other APECSers through tweeting the event, a blog post, an article on the APECS website or some other form of sharing.

If you are interested please send a CV, and a short email explaining why you would like to attend the meeting, and how you would like to share the experience with others to Jenn Provencher (jennifpro@gmail.com).

RE: Looking for APECS representative for CBMP Terrestrial Steering Group meeting - application by 6 February!

Hi APECS members,

I will be attending in person or via teleconference already for this event in Ottawa (as part of the CBMP Terrestrial Team and working on birds, and as part of APECS), but for clarification, we were hoping to have an additional APECS member. J

Thanks!

Subject: Looking for APECS representative for CBMP Terrestrial Steering Group meeting - application by 6 February!

Hi Canadian APECS members,

APECS has been invited by CAFF (Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna - www.caff.is) to send a representative to an upcoming meeting of the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program (CBMP) Terrestrial Steering Group (TSG) from February 16-18 in Ottawa, Canada. The group is meeting to discuss the implementation of the Arctic Terrestrial Biodiversity Monitoring Plan.

As there is no travel funding available, we are looking for someone in and around Ottawa who would be able to attend the meeting for APECS. Interested members should have a background in Arctic terrestrial ecology / monitoring expertise to attend and contribute to the meeting. It would be ideal to get someone with a bird background but this will not be a limiting factor.

If you are interest in this opportunity, please send a statement of interest explaining your research background and why you would be interested in attending the meeting, as well as your CV to info@apecs.is

This is very short notice, so the deadline for submitting your application will be on friday 6 February. The final candidate selection will be made by the CBMP Terrestrial Steering Group.

Please contact me anytime if yo have any questions.

Cheers,

Gerlis
