Fwd: [pacificseabirds] PhD: Antarctic penguin / seal response to historic harvesting and climate change

Of interest to some......

>
> PhD: Antarctic penguin response to historic harvesting and climate change
>
> Seeking a highly motivated student to begin graduate research (Ph.D. candidate) at Louisiana State University's (LSU) Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences (DOCS) in the Spring of 2016. The student will join a multi-institution team of researchers from LSU, UC Santa Cruz, UNC Wilmington, and the University of Saskatchewan on a multi-disciplinary, NSF- funded project to reconstruct recent and long-term shifts in the Antarctic marine food web.
> The student will be based in the Polito Lab at LSU (www.oceanography.lsu.edu/politolab) but will also work closely with Dr. Kelton McMahon and Dr. Matthew McCarthy at UC Santa Cruz (http://keltonmcmahon.sites.ucsc.edu). Specifically, the student will use bulk and compound-specific stable isotope analysis of modern and ancient penguins, seals and other Antarctic krill predators to test hypotheses on trophic versus baseline ecosystem shifts related to climate change and competitive release following historic whale and seal harvesting. This position will include extensive laboratory work at LSU and UCSC as well as field work in Antarctica.
>
> Desired qualifications include: 1) M.S. degree in biology, ecology, marine science, chemistry, or relevant discipline, 2) Relevant laboratory experience, particularly with stable isotope analyses, and 3) relevant field experience, particularly in remote settings.
>
> Four years of NSF-funded tuition and stipend support are available for the selected candidate and additional support is available via DOCS teaching assistantships and other institutional sources.
>
> To Apply:  Interested candidates should fill out a pre-application form for the DOCS graduate program (www.oceanography.lsu.edu/index.php/academics/pre-application-form/) and indicate that you would like to work with Dr. Polito.  In addition, please email a single pdf containing your CV, a cover letter with your research interests and experience, a brief summary of accomplishments (educational background, GPA, GRE scores), and contact information for at least three professional references to Dr. Michael Polito (mpolito@lsu.edu). Qualified candidates will be contacted directly and encouraged to submit a full application to the Ph.D. graduate program in DOCS. Applications submitted by September 15, 2015 will receive first consideration and the position will remain open until a candidate is selected. While a spring 2016 start date is preferred, we will consider exceptional candidates available to start in fall 2016.

To: apecs <apecs@tek.iarc.uaf.edu>

Dear APECS members,

Since the creation of APECS during the last International Polar Year, more than 5100  people from 75 countries have registered as APECS members on our website. Until now, it was not easy to update profile details or cancel APECS membership using the website. To make managing the membership database more efficient, we are migrating to a new service. The old APECS mailing list will stop being used on 1 October 2015. We need you, as current or past APECS members, to choose one of the following options:
  • To remain an APECS member and continue to be subscribed to our mailing list, please update your profile (it only takes 2 minutes!) on our new member registration system. Note: You MUST fill in this form to remain an APECS member. We will NOT automatically move our members over to this new system.
  • To cancel your APECS membership and unsubscribe from our mailing list, please go to our unsubscribe form
You do not consider yourself "early career" anymore and / or are a mentor or partner of APECS and want to remain updated on APECS activities? You can choose to either register for full APECS membership or you can register as a mentor or partner and select which types of announcements you wish to receive from APECS.

Many thanks for your collaboration in this process! Please email info@apecs.is if you have any questions.

APECS Executive Committee and Council 2014-2015

Re: Information on Canadian Citizen Science programs?

Dear Amanda,

Thank you for making us aware of your interesting and exciting project.

Under the leadership of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC), ICC, ELOKA, and other partners have developed a tool that may be useful in your efforts.  The Atlas of Community-Based Monitoring in a Changing Arctic (http://www.arcticcbm.org)  provides a circumpolar view of CBM and Traditional Knowledge projects.  As you will see from the About section, our definition of CBM may or may not directly link to your definition of Citizen Science, however there may be some content in the Atlas that will be useful in your efforts.

I have copied Eva Kruemmel of ICC, and Noor Johnson (former project lead) on this message and I am confident in saying that we would be happy to answer any questions that you, or other APECS members have about the Atlas.

Kind regards,

Peter

Hello APECS Canada!

As part of a SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis Grant (based out of Wilfrid Laurier University under Dr. Chris Lemieux), I am working on a project that explores links between citizen science and environmental education. Specifically, we are interested in how citizen science programs affect participants' perceptions of climate change and their propensity to take either individual or collective action related to climate change after having participated in a citizen science experience. We are also interested in the extent to which programs with a residential aspect, or those that take participants to a novel biophysical environment produce different learning outcomes than day experience or online programs. The project involves a literature review, a program review, and a case study based in Churchill, Manitoba. The program review part of this project involves gathering information and metadata about citizen programs across Canada and so I would be very interested in learning about any citizen science programs that you and/or your organization is involved with- or if you know of other people that I could get in touch with.

Ideally, I'm looking for programs that:

- are based in Canada.

- involve the collection of scientific data by participants in a systematic way. The program's primary objective does not necessarily have to be contributing to a specific scientific study; the goal of the program could be about education, awareness, outreach etc., but there does need to be an active data collection component.

- have a direct (or indirect) research focus on climate change. This parameter is fairly broad for the time being, so even if a program doesn't explicitly meet this criteria, I'd still be interested in hearing about it!

- have data (or metadata) available on learning objectives, research objectives, data collection protocols, project outputs, funding and numbers of participants.

If you have any programs you'd be interested in talking about, or suggestions of other contacts, please get in touch with me at: amanda.winegardner@mail.mcgill.ca

Thank you!
