Subject: Call for applications: Early career representatives in Knowledge-Action Networks
Date: 11 October 2016 at 17:23:42 GMT+2

Dear early career colleagues,

as of yesterday, Future Earth has officially launched a call for applications for early career scientists and practitioners for seven of our Knowledge-Action Networks. Deadline is 2 November 2016.

An important aspect of this call is that it explicitly welcomes applications from both scientists and practitioners, so from both university graduates and professionally trained people without a university degree.

Could you please distribute this call to all your relevant networks and connections? I would be particularly grateful if you could send it to networks/organisations of early career professionals/practitioners since our links to this sector are weaker than to the academic world. Below you find a ready-made text about the call.

I am looking forward to receiving applications from you!

Warm regards,

Hannah

***

Call for applications: Early career representatives in Knowledge-Action Networks

Early career researchers and professional newcomers now have the opportunity to join Future Earth's Knowledge-Action Networks by applying to become a member of their development teams. The deadline is 2 November 2016.

Future Earth is opening up its Knowledge-Action Networks to early career researchers and early career professionals. Becoming part of Knowledge-Action Networks in their early stages will allow you to shape innovative research agendas over the coming years and connect with a global network of leading academics and professionals.

Future Earth explicitly welcomes applications from both practitioners and scientists, so from both university graduates and professionally trained people without a university degree. Eligible candidates should have started their careers or finished their master's degree maximum ten years ago. It is also a necessary requirement to be a member of an early career network, group or organisation. All applicants need to have a strong link to sustainability.

Apply now by filling in this form until 2 November 2016 and become part of Future Earth's innovative research projects for global sustainability!

Fwd: postdoc opportunity: nserc visiting fellowship

To: "Naujokaitis-Lewis, Ilona (EC)" <ilona.naujokaitis-lewis@canada.ca>

Dear colleagues,

I have funding to hire 1 postdoctoral research fellow via the NSERC
visiting fellowship in government laboratories program. It is open to
any nationality; other details below (or in the pdf, attached). I
would be most grateful if you could pass this on to any interested
folks, listserves, etc.

Many thanks,
Ilona

Announcement for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship:
NSERC - Visiting Fellowship in Government Labs

Project title:

Improving predictions of biodiversity responses to global
environmental change: How much data is enough?

Project overview: Our ability to capture the relationships between
organisms and climate is essential for understanding and predicting
the vulnerability of species to climate change. Scientists are
applying increasingly sophisticated models by including demographics,
biotic interactions, and dispersal, to assess consequences of climate
change over broad spatiotemporal scales. Despite the importance of
increasingly mechanistic models, they are data-intensive and rely on
species-specific parameterizations informed by extensive research and
monitoring. While targeted data collection to inform mechanistic
models is essential to improve our ability to predict the consequences
of climate change, insights into whether and when simpler models or
metrics are useful for informing climate change vulnerability
assessments will be essential where data is limited or even absent.
The goal of this research is to gain insight into when simpler models
(e.g., correlative species distribution models) or metrics (e.g.,
climate velocity) provide concordant predictions to mechanistic models
in the context of predicting outcomes to climate change. As part of
the research, the candidate will develop a framework to help guide
model type selection based on species life-history traits and other
attributes. The candidate will work collaboratively with biologists
and climate scientists to produce relevant climate metrics and will be
required to build and use previously existing population dynamics
models/species distribution models for select case study species to
address project goals.

Criteria: We are seeking a candidate that fulfills the following criteria:

- Strong quantitative skills: including statistical modelling,
population dynamics modelling

- Strong background in climate change ecology, wildlife
biology, landscape ecology

- Experience with climate change vulnerability assessments

- Ability to work with large spatiotemporal datasets, and
experience working with historical and future projections of various
climate data products

- Extensive knowledge and proficiency using the statistical
programming language R and various R packages

- Self-motivated, able to interact with a diversity of people

- Demonstrated scientific writing skills (authored one or more
peer-reviewed articles)

Academic qualifications: The successful applicant must hold a PhD
degree within a relevant scientific area (ecology, wildlife biology,
etc.). The applicant must document expertise and interest in the
research subject.

Location: The scientist will be based at the National Wildlife
Research Centre (NWRC) in Ottawa and will work as part of the
Landscape Science and Technology Division, Environment and Climate
Change Canada. The NWRC is located on Carleton University campus, a
setting that presents a diversity of opportunities.

Fellowship description: The position is available through a Visiting
Fellowship in Canadian Government Laboratories administered by the
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
This program provides promising young scientists and engineers with
the opportunity to work with research groups in Canadian government
laboratories and research institutions. For more information on the
NSERC Visiting Fellowships in Canadian Government Laboratories
Program, including eligibility criteria, and application forms, please
consult: http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PD-NP/Laboratories-Laboratoires/index_eng.asp

Deadlines & additional Information:

Candidates should apply to the NSERC VF Fellowship by as early as
possible but no later than October 28th. Applications may be accepted
after this date.

Applications are currently being accepted and the position will remain
open until filled.

The position will start end of January 2017.

The position is initially for a 1-year term, up to a maximum of three
years pending annual review and availability of funds.

The candidate must: (1) apply via the NSERC Fellowship application
process, and (2) send a cover letter describing their interest in the
position and how they fulfill the job criteria, a CV, and a sample of
their writing (peer-reviewed publication preferred) to:

APECS-Canada 2015-16 Annual Report

HI All,
I hope you had a great summer!
Field work in far away Arctic/Antarctic locations, working in the lab,
analyzing data, writing thesis chapters and manuscripts, vacationing, or
maybe even making money!

Each year all APECS National Committees prepare a report on their
activities. This year like others, we have been involved in lots of great
projects and activities.

The APECS Board hopes the annual report will inspire you to get involved
APECS-Canada this coming year. There will be many opportunities for
personal and career development, and for you to support and contribute to
APECS' objectives

In the near future I will be sending out a call for new Board members. The
new Board will begin its work in early October 2016.

Think about becoming a Board member now and be ready to submit your
application.

Cheers,
Vicki
