Introduction to Working with Communities

You are welcome to join the inaugural webinar of the APECS Canada webinar series: Introduction to Working with Communities.Our speakers have vast experience and knowledge on working with communities across the Canadian Arctic, and will provide key advice and information on how to prepare for fieldwork.This can include: pre-arrival contact, securing approvals, understandingethics, co-authorship, community introduction, what to bring with you, adaptingto changing schedules, timelines, weather, hiring local researchers, guides and translators, translation, etc.

Jamal Shirley has worked at the Nunavut Research Institute inIqaluit since 1997. Jamal helps to coordinate research and training projects at NRI, and advises researchers working in the social, natural andbiological disciplines in Nunavut. Jamal has been involved in a variety of research collaborations since 1997 and he is especially interested in understanding sources of conflict in contemporary research relationships.

Alana Mero was an Instructor at Aurora College for nine years before moving to Aurora Research Institute to coordinate International Polar Year forthe NWT. Alana is currently the Beaufort Delta District Director for the NWT Housing Corporation and has a strong interest in social issues and resultsbased research.

Jolie Gareishas been organizing and running field campaigns in the Mackenzie Delta since2004, and has worked as the Manager of the Western Arctic Research Centre inInuvik, Northwest Territories, since January 2011. Her job at the research centre includes coordinating fieldwork and data collection,maintaining the centre and its field and lab equipment, and facilitating education and outreach activities in the town of Inuvik.
