Fwd: Invitation to participate ONLINE in Canadian Consulate-sponsored Arctic event on November 5

Begin forwarded message:

Date: October 25, 2013 3:36:18 PM EDT
Subject: Invitation to participate ONLINE in Canadian Consulate-sponsored Arctic event on November 5

Greetings!

I'm sending this invitation at the recommendation of Dr. Timothy Pasch of the University of North Dakota, one of our featured speakers for a unique Arctic-focused event in North Dakota on Tuesday, November 5th.

The event will trace the lasting impact of the Canadian Arctic Expedition, relay stories of its colourful leader, Vilhjalmur Stefansson (whose early years were spent in North Dakota), and outline Canada's northern strategy and Arctic Council priorities. Featuring three Arctic historians/anthropologists/explorers/researchers who have never before appeared together as speakers (well-known explorer Will Steger, leading CAE scientist & historian David Gray, & Professor Pasch), plus Canadian Consul General Jamshed Merchant, we eagerly anticipate both the dialogue between the speakers and the unique content presented by each. We will also be connecting digitally with elders and community members from Arviat, Nunavut, during the event.

We plan to live-stream the entire event, and will be taking questions from online audiences (via the live stream and via Twitter, using #CAE100), as well as from those at the event.

Therefore, I am writing in the hope that you might participate online and inform your networks of this event, including via social media.

·         The link to the event website is here: ow.ly/psvgq
·         The direct link to the live-stream is here: ow.ly/pHG4f
·         To participate online, please follow @CanCGMPLS on Twitter and join the conversation using the hashtag #CAE100. Interested parties can also watch the event proceedings live and ask questions online.

Many thanks in advance for anything you might do!

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Join the Consulate General of Canada and the University of North Dakota - together with researchers, scientists, explorers, and historians - for a public symposium to investigate the connections between science, people, and sustainability in the Canadian Arctic. This event will trace the legacy of the Canadian Arctic Expedition, launched in 1913, and its leader Vilhjalmur Stefansson, in his day one of the most colorful and notorious students at UND. Speakers will draw on Stefansson's work and influences to examine new linkages between the United States and the Canadian Arctic.

Fwd: short animated film on air quality and climate change

Of interest to some of you....

Dear all,

I am happy to inform you that the 'ClimPol' project has released a 5 minutes animated film on air quality and climate with focus on short-lived climate-forcing pollutants (SLCPs).

"Outlaws in Air City"

The film is available here (http://climpol.iass-potsdam.de/multimedia) in English and German.

Have fun watching it, and please feel free sharing the film with your colleagues, students, friends or family…

Feedback is always welcome.

Best wishes

Julia

Short synopsis

"There is a bad atmosphere in Air City. Nasty substances harass the citizens…" They pollute the air and change the climate.

This film shows how we emit air pollutants that have an effect on climate (short-lived climate-forcing pollutants, SLCPs) and greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in our everyday lives and what we can do to simultaneously reduce them as individuals and society for better air and climate.

Air pollution and climate change are two sides of the same coin. And if we start looking at these two problems as strongly linked challenges, we can make use of various co-benefits and reduce overall expenses for mitigation and coping with air pollution and climate change.

P.S.: Sorry for cross-postings.

ASA Field School Deadline extension

Of interest to some of you!

From February 16-23, 2014, the ArcticNet Student Association (ASA) in partnership with the Arctic Science Partnership (ASP) and the Centre for Northern Studies (Centre d'études Nordiques, CEN), will be holding a field school at the CEN Whapmagoostui-Kuujjuarapik research station in northern Quebec. The event will bring together 20 graduate students from across the globe to learn about Arctic marine and freshwater systems, as well as the animals and vegetation within them, permafrost and contemporary issues facing northerners. Experienced instructors will cover these subjects through lectures, field activities, and interaction with the local communities.

All students attending the field school will be required to pay a $1000 participation fee which covers the charter airfare to and from Montreal airport, living expenses (food, lodging etc.) at the CEN facility, and supplies specific to field school activities. This fee does not cover expenses incurred from travel to and from Montreal, or personal supplies that may be required such as outdoor clothing, writing utensils etc. Additionally, students attending the field school will not be eligible for the ArcticNet Student Training Fund grant.

Students may choose to participate in this field school for course credit (3 credit hours) as Geography 7010 through the University of Manitoba. It is the responsibility of each student to determine whether this credit is transferable to his or her institution. Students interested in receiving credit will be required to:

·         Register with the University following a successful field school application

·         Pay a tuition fee (in addition to the participation fee)

·         Successfully complete course assignments

Additional information on the process of taking the field school for credit, and payment of fees will be provided upon acceptance to the program.

Date: February 16-23, 2014

NEW Deadline for applications: October 18, 2013
