Re: Polar Week Activities - Help needed!!!

Hello Kristen,

I can provide some organizational help if need be, I can also do illustrations.

I would also not mind doing a school webinar, but I don't think I would want to do my first one on my own.

Cheers,

Ianina

Hi all,

FYI. The final report of ICARP III (Third International Conference on Arctic Research Planning) was just published. We've added it also on our website http://www.apecs.is/news/partner-news/1364-integrating-arctic-research-a-roadmap-for-the-future.html

APECS was a partner to this process and Sanna (ccd) here was our amazing rep on the ICARP III Steering Committee for the past 2 years. Sanna and I had been helping with the capacity building chapter of the report.

Cheers,

Gerlis

Integrating Arctic Research - a Roadmap for the Future

The official outcomes of the Third International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP III) were published online today. The enclosed report, entitled "Integrating Arctic Research – A Roadmap for the Future" presents the key messages that emerged from the 2-year ICARP III process.

Initiated by the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) with engagement from its partners, ICARP III provided a process for integrating priorities for forward-looking, collaborative, interdisciplinary Arctic research and observing, and for establishing an inventory of recent and current synthesis documents and major developments in Arctic research. The report identifies the most important Arctic research needs and provides a roadmap for research priorities and partnerships. The ICARP process points the way for scientists to take action, in cooperation with rights holders and stakeholders, to produce results that will have global impact. It concludes that the role of the Arctic in the global system, the prediction of future climate dynamics and ecosystem responses, and improved understanding of the vulnerability and resilience of Arctic environments and societies must be prioritized.

For more information please see the enclosed report and visit the ICARP III website: http://icarp.iasc.info.

CGU/CMOS meeting in Fredericton, Canada: General Cryosphere Session

Dear APECS members,

Abstract submission for the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society's 50th Congress and joint annual Canadian Geophysical Union meeting is now open and we are pleased to announce the "General Cryosphere" session (40100).

This session welcomes presentations and posters relating to modelling, monitoring, and remote sensing of the cryosphere, including glaciers, ice shelves, sea ice, and permafrost, as well as local climate variability and trends.

Submission Deadline is Feb. 15, 2016

http://cmos.in1touch.org/site/abstracts_submission

Note that bursaries from both CGU and CMOS are available to support student attendance.

The theme of this year's congress is "Monitoring of and Adapting to Extreme Events and Long-Term Variations," which should align well with recent changes we are observing in the Canadian North.

The joint-congress will be held from 29 May to 2 June, 2016 at the Fredericton Convention Centre, Fredericton, NB, Canada. The congress will bring together a wide range of scientists and other professionals from across Canada and other countries with a focus on topics in atmospheric, ocean and earth sciences.

Hope to see many of you in beautiful Fredericton!

Earth Observation of the Cryosphere 2016 - Advanced Training Course

Dear Colleagues,

As part of the Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions (SEOM) programme element, the European Space Agency (ESA) is pleased to announce the first advanced training course in Earth Observation of the Cryosphere, which will be hosted at the University of Leeds (UK), from 12 to 16 September 2016.

The course aims to train the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists to exploit data from ESA and other EO satellite missions for science and applications development. The training will include formal lectures by leading scientists as well as hands-on computing exercises exploiting real and simulated data. The course will provide advanced scientific knowledge on the theory and applications of cryosphere remote sensing, including:

  • Theoretical fundamentals of space-borne Optical, SAR, gravimeter and altimeter remote sensing;
  • EO lectures on the Cryosphere, with a focus on Sea Ice, Mountain Glaciers, Snow and the Polar Ice Sheets;
  • Practicals using ESA toolboxes and commercial software for scientific exploitation of EO data;
  • EO data processing and product demonstration for monitoring the cryosphere.

Post graduate, PhD students, post–doctoral research scientists and users from European countries and Canada interested in Cryosphere Remote Sensing and its applications are invited to apply to the 5 day course which will be held at the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) at the University of Leeds, UK.
Research scientists and students from all other countries are also welcome to apply and participate to the course subject to space availability.

Deadline for applications: 20 May 2016

More info and an on-line application form are available at:
http://seom.esa.int/cryotraining2016/
All enquiries should be sent to
eotraining@esa.int

Kind regards
