As an individual who has been involved/interested in Antarctic research, your input is critical in determining areas in which Canadian Antarctic expertise may best contribute to addressing pressing Antarctic and Southern Ocean research questions and improving understanding the Antarctic region and associated polar linkages to global systems.

Background:
Polar Knowledge Canada<http://www.canada.ca/en/polar-knowledge/index.html> (POLAR) was established on June 1st, 2015. It merges the mandate and functions of the Canadian Polar Commission with the world-class Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) and its science and technology program. This includes an Antarctic mandate, and a commitment to develop a National Antarctic Research Program for Canada, with continued advice and guidance from the Canadian Committee on Antarctic Research<http://www.canada.ca/en/polar-knowledge/advancingpolarknowledge/ccar/index.html> (CCAR).
POLAR will host a workshop in Ottawa in Spring 2016 that will bring together the Canadian polar research community to determine science and technology priorities for a National Antarctic Research Program for Canada. Results from the Fall 2015 call for input will be used to identify areas where Canadian expertise (Antarctic and Arctic) may assist in addressing pressing Antarctic and Southern Ocean research questions. A second call for input in February/March 2016 will advance the ideas explored in the first call to develop Canada's best way forward to support a Canadian Antarctic Research Program, in collaboration with the international polar research community. Results from both calls for input will be used to facilitate the discussions that will take place at the Spring 2016 workshop.
POLAR's Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) and its science and technology program are already attracting significant interest from the international polar research community. POLAR has been actively working to establish Letters of Agreement or Memorandums of Understanding with institutions such as the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in France, the National Research Council of Italy, the Instituto Antártico Argentino, and the British Antarctic Survey in order to strengthen scientific cooperation in the polar regions, and has received expressions of interest from institutions in other countries. It is these institutional-level agreements that will enable POLAR to negotiate collaborative partnerships whereby CHARS is used to leverage the resources needed to establish and support a Canadian Antarctic Research Program. Successful achievement of program results in terms of increased understanding of pressing Antarctic and Southern Ocean research questions can then be used to solicit further resources to support an expanded program.

Cela comprend un mandat concernant l'Antarctique et l'engagement à élaborer pour le Canada un Programme national de recherche antarctique en comptant toujours sur les avis et orientations du Comité canadien des recherches antarctiques<http://www.canada.ca/fr/savoir-polaire/faireavancersavoirpolaire/ccra/index.html> (CCRA).
POLAIRE tiendra à Ottawa, au printemps 2016, un atelier réunissant la collectivité canadienne de la recherche polaire afin d'établir les priorités scientifiques et technologiques d'un Programme national de recherche antarctique pour le Canada. Un deuxième appel à contributions, qui sera lancé en février/mars 2016, permettra de pousser plus loin les idées étudiées dans le premier appel afin d'établir la marche à suivre pour le Canada et d'appuyer un Programme canadien sur la recherche antarctique en collaboration avec la collectivité internationale de la recherche polaire. Les résultats des deux appels à contributions serviront à faciliter les discussions qui auront lieu à l'atelier du printemps 2016.
La Station de recherche canadienne dans l'Extrême-Arctique (SRCEA) de POLAIRE et son programme de science et de technologie suscitent déjà un intérêt important dans la collectivité internationale de la recherche polaire. Ce sont ces ententes au niveau institutionnel qui permettront à POLAIRE de négocier des partenariats coopératifs où la SRCEA servira à obtenir les ressources nécessaires pour offrir et soutenir un Programme national de recherche antarctique pour le Canada. Si le programme débouche sur des résultats favorables, soit une meilleure connaissance des questions de recherche pressantes en Antarctique et dans l'océan Austral, il sera alors possible de s'en servir pour demander d'autres ressources à l'appui d'un programme élargi.
