Intercultural Indigenous Workshop - Evening Event and Webinar

Hello APECS Canada,

Next Thursday and Friday, November 16th and 17th, is the 2nd annual Intercultural Indigenous Workshop (IIW): Sharing perspectives and experiences of research in Canada's North at McGill University.


If you are not available for the workshops during the day, we would like to remind you that there are keynote speakers, a round table discussion and a networking event on Thursday evening (Nov. 16th). There is no entrance fee and no registration required. All are welcome!


Location: Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU), University Centre, 3480 McTavish, Montreal. Ballroom 301.


Time: 5:30 to 9:00 pm (EDT) Keynote speakers from 5:30 to 6:15, a roundtable discussion from 6:15 to 7:30, followed by a networking event until 9:00 pm.


Keynote Speakers: There will be two talks on how to best engage with northern/indigenous communities in our research given by Prof. Marianne Stenbaek and Kakwiranó:ron Cook.

Prof. Marianne Stenbaek is in the English department of McGill University and specializes in Nunavimmiut writings, Contemporary post-colonial Greenlandic and Nunavik literatures, Canadian Northern Regions and Digital technologies. She carried out research for many years in the Canadian Arctic and Greenland. Prof. Stenbaek was president of ACUNS for four years and was able to institute changes in regard to including northern peoples more actively in research and to promote a circumpolar perspective.

Kakwiranó:ron Cook is an enrolled member of both the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne (New York/Ontario/Quebec) and Oglala Lakota Sioux Nation at Pine Ridge (South Dakota). As the Aboriginal Outreach Administrator at McGill University, Kakwiranó:ron works collaboratively with First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities across Canada on- and off- reserve in an effort to connect with youth, prospective university students and their families to promote higher education and McGill University.

Dr. Murray Humphries: Associate Professor of Wildlife Biology at McGill University, Director of the Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment (CINE), and the Institut Nordique du Quebec (INQ) McGill Chair in Northern Research. As a wildlife biologist, his work encompasses traditional and scientific ecological knowledge of wildlife in the food systems of Indigenous Peoples.


Melanie Lumsden: B.A. in Political Science and Interethnic Studies. Co-founder of Mikana, an organization whose mission is to educate diverse audiences about Aboriginal realities in Canada. Director of short films on the themes of self-determination, racism and discrimination through Wapikoni Mobile.


Dr. Jennifer Provencher: W. Garfield Weston Postdoctoral Fellow in Northern Research at Acadia University studying how plastic debris may act as a vector for contaminants in marine wildlife. Long time member and Chair of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists, Canadian Chapter (APECS Canada), she is passionate about science education, outreach and communication in the Arctic.


Nina Segalowitz: Inuk from the Northwest Territories, accomplished throat singer for the past 20 years and child of the Sixties Scoop. Throat singing is a way for her to bridge two worlds and share her culture with people from many different backgrounds.

Networking event: Cocktails and snacks will be available and we are excited to have a throat singing performance by two accomplished Inuit artists, Nina Segalowitz and Lydia Etok.
