This award has been created to acknowledge the time and energy that mentors dedicate to early career researchers each year, and their efforts in building a supportive community.

APECS Canada Board Nomination Period OPEN unitl SEPTEMBER 18th, 2015- Apply today!

Dear APECS Canada members,

At the start of this new term we are happy to announce that the Terms of Reference/ Rules of Procedures (TOR/ROP) written by our working group has been approved by the current APECS board.

According to our new TOR/ROP APECS Canada operates under the leadership of our open board and a leadership team that will be elected from the board by the board. The open board will be voted in each fall term by the outgoing board.

As such we are opening the NOMINATION PERIOD for the incoming Board members for the 2015-2016 term. The Board term is from 1 October to 30 September of each year and is renewable. All current Board members must please re-apply including anyone who joined recently in mid-term.

Eligibility:

Anyone who is a current member of APECS Canada can self-nominate to become a member of the board. To clarify, you become a member of APECS Canada by ensuring you are signed up as a member of APECS International, as APECS Canada is a national committee under APECS.

Nomination

We ask our members to please self-nominate! To do so, please submit a brief statement of interest (250 word max) and a C.V. In your statement please state your name, your institution, your degree and program as well as any relevant information regarding your activity with APECS to date and your desired contribution to the board. If you are currently or have in the past been a resident of a northern region of Canada please let us know, as we actively seek members from the north to join our board and leadership.

2.4 The roles and responsibilities of the Board

2.4.1 All APECS Canada members are eligible to serve on the Board.

2.4.2 The Board is mandated to make decisions and implement APECS Canada directions, activities, governance, and organizational structure. All members of the Board shall further the long-term interest of APECS Canada while fulfilling the mission of APECS Canada.

2.4.3 All members of the Board are responsible for attending meetings. Board members are expected to work together outside of their outlined duties to promote major APECS Canada activities and governance.

2.4.5 The Board term is from 1 October to 30 September of each year and is renewable. Board members joining mid-term will be up for renewal with all Board members on 30 September.

2.4.6 Terms are for 1 year and renewable, with the hope that not all Board members change at each nomination period in order to provide continuity.

2.4.8 The APECS Canada board will consist of at least 5 members to be considered active and held to these Terms of Reference and Rules of Procedure. There is no maximum size to the Board. The Board has the power and authority to increase or decrease its members as it sees fit based on the growth and development of APECS Canada, while maintaining at a minimum of at least 5 members.

2.4.10 Board Members are entitled to:

Voting privileges on matters of importance to the TOR or ROP;
Participate in decision-making for APECS Canada; and
Apply to be a part of APECS Canada's Board Leadership Team.

2.4.11 Board members have the right and responsibility to share information on their organizational and research area's activities with APECS Canada members on a regular basis, as well as distribute APECS Canada information to their organizations' members.

2.4.12 In addition to the responsibilities of communication and participation, Board members must also contribute to a number of APECS Canada events and activities each year including, but not limited to, the following tasks to build and enhance APECS Canada as an organization, for example:

Post news items to the APECS website and social media pages
Participate and/or organize a webinar
Create a 'did-you-know' factoid for distribution
Assist in organization and promotion of the field calendar
Encourage the recruitment of new APECS members
Attend and/or organize APECS events at conferences when they occur
Panel discussions and/or networking events at large conference
Social gatherings at home institution
Give APECS presentations at a conference/meeting
Host a drinks-on-ice event locally
Plan and host a career development webinar
Suggest new activities, not listed here.

2.4.13 The Board is required to submit an activity report to APECS once a year (usually in August), outlining events and activities that have occurred during the previous term (from October 1st to September 30th of each year).

2.4.14 If a long period of absence is part of a Board member's research/education/personal life or if periods of low activity due to upcoming commitments are anticipated, Board members have the responsibility to notify the Chair of the Board or Vice-Chair of Administration at least 30 days in advance of the period in question.

Fwd: Postdoctoral fellowship - housing and health in the Canadian Arctic

We are looking to fill postdoctoral position on a project examining housing conditions in the Canadian Arctic in relation to Inuit health and well-being. This mixed-methods project has two components: a prospective epidemiological intended to assess the impact of access to new housing on the health of Inuit; and qualitative study designed to document experiences of access to new housing for Inuit families and define "adequate housing" and "overcrowding" according to Inuit perspectives.

The trainee will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team of researchers and graduate students based at Axe Santé des populations et pratiques optimales en santé of the Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec – Université Laval.

Pierre Ayotte and I are looking for an exceptional candidate for a postdoctoral position in Environmental Epidemiology.

This postdoctoral fellowship is based on a cross sectional study aimed to examine the associations and interactions between Hg exposure, nutritional status, and type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk factors among Nunavik Inuit. For this study, new analytical methods have been developed in order to study new biomarkers of Se status (selenoproteins, selenoalbumin and selenoneine) and metabolites of early type 2 diabetes (2-aminoadipic acid, branched chain amino acids and acylcarnitines).

The trainee will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team of researchers and graduate students based at l'Axe Santé des populations et pratiques optimales en santé of the Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec – Université Laval, and at the Institut National de Santé Publique du Québec.

Ce stage repose sur une étude transversale ayant pour objectif d'étudier les associations et les interactions entre l'exposition au Hg, le statut nutritionnel et le diabète de type 2 et les facteurs de risques des maladies cardiovasculaires chez les Inuit au Nunavik. Pour cette étude, de nouvelles méthodes analytiques ont été développées dans le but d'étudier de nouveaux bioindicateurs de statut en Se (sélénoprotéines, sélénoalbumine et sélénoneine) et des métabolites précoces du diabète de type 2 (acide 2-aminoadipique, acides aminés branchés et acylcarnitines).
