Hello APECS Canada!As part of a SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis Grant (based out of Wilfrid Laurier University under Dr. Chris Lemieux), I am working on a project that explores links between citizen science and environmental education. Specifically, we are interested in how citizen science programs affect participants' perceptions of climate change and their propensity to take either individual or collective action related to climate change after having participated in a citizen science experience. We are also interested in the extent to which programs with a residential aspect, or those that take participants to a novel biophysical environment produce different learning outcomes than day experience or online programs. The project involves a literature review, a program review, and a case study based in Churchill, Manitoba. The program review part of this project involves gathering information and metadata about citizen programs across Canada and so I would be very interested in learning about any citizen science programs that you and/or your organization is involved with- or if you know of other people that I could get in touch with.Ideally, I'm looking for programs that:- are based in Canada.- involve the collection of scientific data by participants in a systematic way. The program's primary objective does not necessarily have to be contributing to a specific scientific study; the goal of the program could be about education, awareness, outreach etc., but there does need to be an active data collection component.- have a direct (or indirect) research focus on climate change. This parameter is fairly broad for the time being, so even if a program doesn't explicitly meet this criteria, I'd still be interested in hearing about it!- have data (or metadata) available on learning objectives, research objectives, data collection protocols, project outputs, funding and numbers of participants.If you have any programs you'd be interested in talking about, or suggestions of other contacts, please get in touch with me at: amanda.winegardner@mail.mcgill.caThank you!Amanda Winegardner

We are pleased to announce the launch of ArcticNet's 2015 Photo Contest.
Over the last few years, ArcticNet has been gathering photographs of Arctic scenery, people, flora, fauna and fieldwork captured as part of a variety of ArcticNet related activities in Canada and beyond. Many Arctic researchers and their collaborators are talented photographers visiting and studying some of the most remote and pristine environments on our planet. A selection of these great photos can be viewed on our Polar Photography gallery that also welcomes photos from Antarctica.
The main purpose of the 2015 ArcticNet Photo Contest is to encourage ArcticNet members, partners and international collaborators to bring their great photos of the changing Arctic, its peoples, communities, landscapes, wildlife and research activities out in the open and to share them with the world. We invite you to dive into your hard drives, cameras and computers, and send us your best shots!
The deadline for submitting your photos is Friday, 30 October 2015. Eligibility criteria and submission details for the contest are available HERE. Over $1000 in cash prizes will be awarded. Winners will be announced and photos showcased at ArcticNet's Annual Scientific Meeting in Vancouver in December 2015.
With its growing collection of stunning images, the Polar Photography gallery is quickly becoming an increasingly popular source of Arctic and Antarctic photos with media, education outlets and other research programs. In recent years, these photos have been featured in dozens of prominent national (The Gazette, Ottawa Life, Globe and Mail, UpHere, Above & Beyond, Canadian Geographic…) and international (Time Magazine, GEO Magazine, Washington Post, Le Monde, Al Jazeera…) print and electronic media publications. Photographers retain exclusive copyright of their photographs and receive forty percent of the revenues resulting from the use of their photos by third parties.
Although the submission deadline is Friday, 30 October 2015, we encourage you to submit your photos as soon as possible as they may be selected for publication in our 2014-2015 Annual Report.

Depuis quelques années, ArcticNet recueille les photographies de l'Arctique prises lors d'activités de recherche d'ArcticNet au Canada et à l'étranger. Les chercheurs de l'Arctique et leurs collaborateurs sont de plus des photographes de talent qui visitent et étudient certaines des régions les plus éloignées et les plus pures de notre planète. Une sélection de ces photographies se trouve sur la galerie de photos d'ArcticNet qui inclut aussi des images de l'Antarctique.
L'objectif principal du concours photo 2015 d'ArcticNet est d'encourager les membres, les partenaires et les collaborateurs internationaux d'ArcticNet à partager avec le grand public leurs excellentes photos de l'Arctique, de ses habitants, de ses communautés, de ses paysages, de sa faune et de ses activités de recherche. Nous vous invitons donc à fouiller vos disques durs, cartes mémoire et ordinateurs et à nous faire parvenir vos images les plus réussies.
La date butoir pour la soumission des photos est le vendredi 30 octobre 2015. Les critères d'éligibilité et les directives de soumission sont disponibles ICI. Plus de 1000 $ en argent seront versés à titre de prix. Les noms des gagnants du concours seront dévoilés et leurs photos présentées lors de la réunion scientifique annuelle d'ArcticNet à Vancouver en décembre 2015.
Avec sa collection grandissante d'images remarquables de l'Arctique, la galerie de photos d'ArcticNet devient une source de photos de plus en plus populaire auprès des milieux éducationnels, des médias et d'autres programmes de recherche. Ces photos ont été publiées à maintes reprises dans de prestigieuses publications nationales (The Gazette, Ottawa Life, Globe and Mail, UpHere, Above & Beyond, Canadian Geographic, etc.) et internationales (Time Magazine, GEO Magazine, Washington Post, Le Monde, AlJazeera, etc.). Les photographes gardent les droits d'auteur pour leurs photos et reçoivent 40 % des revenus résultant de leur utilisation par de tierces parties.
Bien que la date limite pour le concours soit le vendredi 30 octobre 2015, nous vous encourageons à soumettre vos photos le plus rapidement possible. Elles pourraient ainsi être sélectionnées et publiées dans le prochain rapport annuel 2014-2015.
