APECS Canada Webinar: Working with Northern Communities to Build Collaborative Research Partnerships

Hello APECS Canada,

We are excited to be hosting our first webinar of 2018! Join us on February 28th from 1-3pm EST to hear Dr. Jennifer Provencher present on her experiences collaborating with northern communities to form research partnerships. The presentation will be followed by a Q+A session. Dr. Jennifer Provencher is currently a W. Garfield Weston Post-Doctoral Fellow in Northern Research at Acadia University. For more information about Jennifer's research, check out her website: jenniferprovencher.com

Title: Working with Northern Communities to Build Collaborative Research Partnerships: Perspectives from an Early Career Researcher

Abstract: Working with northern communities is a part of Arctic research in Canada. I will discuss my experiences from my graduate and post-doctoral work as a natural scientist working with communities in Nunavut, Nunavik and the NWT. I will talk about how early career researchers can engage with communities, co-develop research questions, and create meaningful training programs with communities. This will include discussing opportunities, mechanisms, and barriers to engaging in community collaborative research in northern Canada. I will also expand on some ideas from a co-authored essay (Tondu et al. 2014, Arctic), and talk about specific examples of how I implemented these practices in my own work as an ecologist.

Northern Studies Master's Program accepting applications for 2018-19

Hello APECS Canada,

Carleton University is offering a new 1-year intensive Master's program for Northern Studies!
Apologies for the late notice - the deadline for applications is February 1st, 2018. Please see below for more details about the program.

---------------------

The Northern Studies Program at Carleton University is a 1 year intensive Master's program and 2018-19 will be the 2nd year of our program.

The purpose of the Northern Studies programs is to provide opportunities for students to learn how to recognize and support wise public and private-sector decision making in the dynamic North.  The program is interdisciplinary and rooted in analysis of real-world problems. It presents research at the cutting edge from across the North.

The program emphasizes the biophysical, social, and policy environments of northern Canada. It recognizes the impacts of climate change on northern ecosystems and on the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities that depend on renewable resources. It acknowledges the stresses of cultural transition and evolving governance as land claims and self-government agreements are completed and implemented. It appreciates the importance of functional bureaucracies and practices that reflect the aspirations of northerners. It apprehends the changes to the Arctic Ocean that will facilitate shipping and bring many visitors to the North.

The Northern Studies program is:
-The first interdisciplinary program at the Master level to present a combined focus on the social, political, and physical environments of northern Canada;
-It offers short, intensive access to a Master degree and Graduate Diploma in the National Capital Region;
-The core seminars for the program are multi and interdisciplinary;
-The program recognizes the importance of understanding the nature and capacity of research in order to support decision-making in the North;
-The program aims to assist northern professionals, who need further academic experience to advance their career ambitions, through both intensive Master degrees and the Graduate Diplomas;
-The degree program presents a full credit of experiential learning during a field course in the North and a work placement.
-The program welcomes applications from all people interested in an interdisciplinary approach to Northern Studies. We especially welcome applications and inquiries from Indigenous and non-Indigenous northerners. The program aims to foster respect, appreciation, and interest in the great diversity of cultures and environments found in the North.

To apply:  https://carleton.ca/northernstudies/application-procedure/

Applications are due on February 1, 2018.  This program has limited enrollment due to its unique interactive and experiential approach.  Applications will continue to be accepted until all places in the program have been filled.
