Short-term analytical opportunity with the Canadian Polar Commission to analyze the state of environmental monitoring in northern Canada
In support of SAON Canada, the Canadian Polar Commission is completing a collaborative analysis of the current state of environmental monitoring in northern Canada in order to identify gaps in coverage and make recommendations about how these may be addressed. Three individuals are sought to contribute to the analysis from mid-June to mid-September 2014.
The Analysts will:
· Identify monitoring activities presently being delivered via government programs, academia, NGOs, and industry
· Contribute to an analysis of the existing monitoring networks and explore gaps in the geographical areas and environmental variables being monitored
· Contribute to making recommendations for how to address the gaps in monitoring.
This project is an opportunity to build networks in a diversity of sectors and to critically think about the structure and progress of monitoring programs in the Canadian North. This work can be delivered from any internet-accessible location in Canada. The level of effort is approximately 25 hour/week @ $24.80/hr for up to 12 weeks, and the opportunities are available immediately.
Candidates must have completed an undergraduate degree in a relevant field of study, be familiar with environmental monitoring and data collection, and have a keen interest in meta-analysis and data mining. Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and communication skills are essential, as it relates to interacting with diverse players from government to industry. Candidates must be highly organized and able to manage large amounts of data and correspondence. Lastly, candidates must be independent, self-driven, and able to effectively manage time.

The Canadian Polar Commission is currently seeking part-time analysts to accomplish important science-policy work by proactively reporting on significant monitoring results within Sustaining Arctic Observing Networks (SAON) Canada. Analysts will be responsible for reporting regularly on results of SAON projects within designated themes, and will be supported by a Policy Analyst as a mentor. There will be six positions per term for each of the fall 2014 and winter 2015 terms. These are remote positions, requiring 4-5 hours of work a week for 12 weeks, to be paid approximately $1000. Details: | We are looking for a Ph.D. student to study the migration ecology of shorebirds along the James Bay coast of Ontario. The position would be in the Environmental and Life Science (ENLS) Graduate Program at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. ENLS is a large and active graduate program with over 160 MSc and Ph.D students, most of whom are interested in Ecology and/or Conservation Biology. The position would be co-supervised by Dr. Erica Nol (Trent University) and Dr. Paul Smith (Environment Canada). The student would conduct field work for a minimum of two months a year at a network of remote sites in southern James Bay, Ontario. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated learner with previous experience in rugged environments, and with banding birds. Experience with VHF telemetry is also an asset. The successful applicant will have major input into study design and implementation. Publications from previous work (e.g., MSc or work-related research) and skills in data analysis are strong assets. Funding is secured for three years. Student support will come from a combination of graduate teaching assistantships from Trent University and funding from Environment Canada, with scholarships if applicable. Minimum annual support for Ph.D. students at Trent University is $20,435.99 with GTA support for the fourth year.
