Can someone forward this to all the Canadian Members

Hi all,

Leona Aglukkak, MP for Nunavut will be the next chair of the Arctic Council.

She was in Iqaluit on Saturday at an invitee only consultation session to collect ideas on what Canada should emphasize when we take on the chair for the Arctic Council.

The invitees were business, Inuit organizations, tourism and NU govt officials.

It is vital to get the environment and climate change on her agenda. And this will be an up hill battle.

As many people as possible need to send in ideas and priorities.

Deadline:  09 November 2012.

I would also cc Leona Aglukkak regular parliamentary email

And pass this information on to any one you know that cares about the arctic

Cheers,

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation promotes academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany. To this end, it grants more than 700 research fellowships and research awards annually to individual researchers who become life-long members of an international network of alumni, the so-called "Humboldtians". As a gathering of the Humboldt community in Canada, the Humboldt Colloquium "Excellence in Research" in Toronto will celebrate the German-Canadian partnership in research and will explore current trends in the making and funding of excellent research in all fields of research in both Germany and Canada.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has a strong history and special commitment of promoting excellent young researchers and supporting their building of international careers and academic collaborations. Therefore, we wish to involve a group of approximately 50 researchers in the meeting who are not members of the Humboldt community yet but may wish to become fellows in the future. The Session for Early Career Researchers will give prominent space and attention to this group, allowing them to present their current work to more senior and established Canadian researchers with strong international experience and connections. The format will be a combination of presentations and a poster session. Advanced PhD students and scientists and scholars who received their PhD degree fewer than 6 years ago may participate in the full three-day event and may seek personal advice on specific sponsorship opportunities from the representatives of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and its partner organizations, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Max Planck Society (MPG) and possibly Canadian organizations.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will cover the costs for the participation of early career researchers in the program and grant a lump-sum conference allowance of 150 CAD for participants attending from outside Toronto.

Applications will be accepted until 7 September under the link provided in the attached call. All applications will be reviewed by a committee of Humboldt alumni as well as staff of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The selection of the participants will be based on the abstracts, biography and list of publications submitted. All applicants will be notified by the first week of October.

Candidates seeking more information about the event should visit the website provided in the call. Should institutional partners be interested in attending the session and presenting their sponsorship or career opportunities, we kindly ask that they contact the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation:

Helping the CPC

Hi Everyone,

As  many of you know that since the IPY meeting in Montreal APECS Canada has gone from idea to action.  We have a website (http://apecs.is/get-involved/national-committees/apecs-canada), we have a leadership group (called the board at this point) that is leading a number of different projects, and we are working with several different partners, including the Canadian Polar Commission (CPC), who are very eager and excited about APECS Canada, and better connecting and serving the Canadian polar community.

Currently the CPC is re-doing their website, and with us and their other target users in mind, they are looking for some help, which is where you come in!

In order to help the CPC, APECS Canada is looking to form a small working group that can help the CPC as they build and develop their new website.  This would entail looking at the new CPC website every few weeks for the coming 6(ish) months, browsing around it, testing it out, and then submitting comments/feedback/suggestions on what you would like to see to the CPC website team. It does not require any website design or technical skills. So if you know how to click and point, and would like to help the CPC make their website easier to navigate, include the info that you are interesting  in accessing and all around put a better face forward to the polar community please contact me at jennifpro@gmail.com. This is a great opportunity to help shape the CPC, gain experience and contacts from working with the CPC staff, and contribute to polar science efforts in Canada without any huge commitments.

Hope to hear from many of you!

Thanks,

Jennifer Provencher

Dear Gerlis,

This questionnaire about the S&T infrastructure at the Canadian High Arctic Research Stations went out late last week.  I was wondering if there is any way we could get this distributed to the APECS members, we'd really like to hear more from the students and early career scientists on this.

Many Thanks

You have been contacted because of your experience in the North, particularly as it pertains to carrying out research activities. You are invited to forward this questionnaire to colleagues who you believe may also be interested in providing input.

The purpose of this questionnaire is to solicit input to inform the development of the science and technology (and supporting) infrastructure at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) that will be built in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.  The information compiled from this exercise will inform the design of the infrastructure of the Station.  Individual responses will remain confidential and only collated information will be distributed.

CHARS will provide a year-round, world-class hub for science and technology activities in Canada's North, complementing and anchoring the existing network of smaller regional facilities.  The science and technology undertaken by CHARS will be interdisciplinary and will include natural and physical sciences, economic and social sciences, health and life sciences, the humanities as well as engineering and technology development. It will integrate across scientific processes and across scales. Activities may include monitoring and surveillance; research, modelling and prediction; technology development and transfer; knowledge application; training, education and outreach as well as provision of logistics services.

The Station will engage CHARS staff as well as Northerners, industry personnel, academics and government and international researchers in its science and technology activities.

To fill out a questionnaire please go to the following link:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/charsinfrastructurequestionnaire

For further information on CHARS please visit: www.science.gc.ca/CHARS

The questionnaire will remain open until June 7, 2012.
