You have been contacted because of your experience in the North, particularly as it pertains to carrying out research activities. You are invited to forward this questionnaire to colleagues who you believe may also be interested in providing input.

 

The purpose of this questionnaire is to solicit input to inform the development of the science and technology (and supporting) infrastructure at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) that will be built in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.  The information compiled from this exercise will inform the design of the infrastructure of the Station.  Individual responses will remain confidential and only collated information will be distributed.

 

CHARS will provide a year-round, world-class hub for science and technology activities in Canada's North, complementing and anchoring the existing network of smaller regional facilities.  The science and technology undertaken by CHARS will be interdisciplinary and will include natural and physical sciences, economic and social sciences, health and life sciences, the humanities as well as engineering and technology development. It will integrate across scientific processes and across scales. Activities may include monitoring and surveillance; research, modelling and prediction; technology development and transfer; knowledge application; training, education and outreach as well as provision of logistics services.

 

The Station will engage CHARS staff as well as Northerners, industry personnel, academics and government and international researchers in its science and technology activities.

Ce questionnaire a pour but d'aider à déterminer de quelles infrastructures scientifiques et technologiques (et infrastructures de soutien) devrait être dotée la Station de recherche du Canada dans l'Extrême-Arctique (SRCEA), qui sera construite à Cambridge Bay, au Nunavut. La Station intégrera tout un éventail de processus scientifiques, à toutes les échelles. Il s'y exercera des activités d'observation et de surveillance, de recherche, de modélisation et de prédiction, de développement et de transfert technologiques, d'application des connaissances, de formation, d'éducation et de vulgarisation, et des services de logistique y seront offerts aussi.

 

Le personnel de la Station de recherche du Canada dans l'Extrême-Arctique, les résidants du Nord, les employés de l'industrie, les universitaires et les chercheurs du gouvernement et d'autres pays participeront aux activités scientifiques et technologiques de la Station.

APECS Canada moving forward!

Hello APECS Canada!

To all of you who were at the IPY meeting Montreal I hope that you made it home safe and sound.  To all of you who were unable to come, we had a great APECS Canada meeting, and the consensus is that there are lots of people who want this National Committee to move forward.  And here is the game plan.......

1. At the APECS Canada meeting we identified 3 areas that members were interested in or felt there was a need for.
    A) A series of webinars/virtual poster sessions that addressed the needs of early career researchers in Canada. The idea is to plan 4-6 webinars for next winter that will use the APECS  
       system and be hosted and advertised by APECS Canada.  So far we have:
       i) Community consultations, where to start - Morgan Ip
      ii) Small engines, where to start - Ciara Sebastian
      iii) Handling high stress situation in the field - Stacey Elmore
      iv) Framing your photographs for science papers and presentations - Piotr Angiel

   If you are interested in helping out with one of the above suggestions, or have some more ideas that you would like to take the lead on please contact Louise Chavarie at
   chavarie@ualberta.ca, as Louise as kindly stepped up to help organize and coordinate this coming years  APECS Canada webinar series.

   B) Sharing of information on research sites in Canada. Many of us work in the same areas, out of the same communities.  A group got together to discuss how efforts could be
   coordinated and information on communities shared.

   If you are interested in helping move this forward and contributing please contact ? (To be determined).

   C) There are many meetings in Canada that aren't necessarily polar, but can be used as platforms to have more APECS events including mentor panels, or even pub nights.  We are
    looking for a team of people that could work together to putting together a list of meetings, and people going to them so that we can encourage people to organize local events that
    coincide with other meetings.

2. Compared to a number of other national committees we are highly supported by a number of groups and organizations, even at really high levels.  So we want to build on the momentum from the IPY meeting, and get APECS Canada moving forward.  So what we need now are a few people that can take on some leadership tasks and get this projects going. The goal here is to get a group of people that can work together and share a few responsibilities as we carry out a few of these concrete plans, and build on our successes. 

If you are interested in helping shape APECS Canada, working with other Canadian polar groups and learn some invaluable leadership skills, no matter on where you are in your early career please let me know, and I will connect everyone, forming the first leadership committee for the new Canadian National Committee for APECS! (ok, I know that last line is chessy, but I really am excited about this and want to harness some of the amazing energy that I have felt through both in person meetings sand emails that I have had with many of you!).  Louise has already stepped up, who else is game?

APECS Canada meeting in Montreal!

Hello Everyone,

We have organized an opportunity for Canadian APECS members to gather and meet each other at the upcoming IPY Montreal meeting.

Many of you have inquired about forming an APECS Canada chapter, well this is the first step!  On Wednesday, April 25th at 5pm APECS Canada will meet in room 710A at the Palais de Congres conference center (where the IPY conference meeting is taking place).

We will talk about how APECS Canada members can better connect, and topics that are of special concern to polar early career reserachers in Canada. If you are interested in helping organize, lead or add any other topics to the agenda please let me know.

Information needed from Polar Early Career Researchers in Canada

Hello Canadian Polar Early Career Researchers,

A number of members from both APECS and the ArcticNet Student Association (ASA) have been discussing forming an APECS Canada chapter. As we move forward we would like to  hear from you, Canadian polar early career researchers (ECR).

I'm pleased to hear that there will be a television program dedicated to sharing the lives of the hard-working people of the North with the world. However, I sincerely hope that the show will also recognize the many contributions made by WOMEN who work in the North [1]. If the producers need any help finding some of them, please contact the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists at http://apecs.is. The membership directory [2] contains hundreds of people, women and men, who would make excellent subjects for your show.
